Historical Teaching Background
For over 20 years Patricia has taught and fostered the growth of yoga in Saskatchewan. She was first introduced to Iyengar yoga in 1986. As Patricia’s knowledge and practice deepened she co-founded Yoga Central in Saskatoon in 2000. Within 3 yrs, inspired by her studies at the Yoga Room in Berkeley California and their subtle Iyengar approach of Awakening the Inner Body she became the sole owner of the studio. Three years later, the thriving success of this studio enabled her to establish a rigorous teacher training program directed by Mary Lou Weprin of the Yoga Room and herself. The teaching staff included the international Iyengar teacher Father Joe Pereira, and well known American teachers Lynne Minton and Gay White. Also, professional guest lectures from the University of Saskatchewan (Philosophy, Religion, Kinesiology, and Physiotherapy) augmented an on-going learning program. Of the 15 graduates in 2009, 14 teach or own a yoga studio in the province and one in Ontario. Four graduates are presently teaching at The Yoga Mat in Saskatoon.
Currently Patricia continues to mentor teachers from diverse backgrounds and yoga styles. In the past 3 yrs has been involved with a University of Saskatchewan Cancer study that sought to understand the physical and psychological impact of yoga as a part of the recovery process.
Patricia remains inspired by her main teachers Donald Moyer, Mary Lou Weprin, and Father Joe Pereira, as well as who have contributed to her growth in viewing yoga as a path to life. She is passionate about making yoga accessible to all ages and all body types. In 2012, she is teaching a variety of classes, individuals, and small groups. Although Patricia has led and co led several yoga retreats outside of Canada, she takes great delight in fulfilling requests by former students and colleagues to give workshops throughout the Province, (Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Kindersley, Regina, Saskatoon ) and elswhere. |
